To have an effective internet marketing campaign, you need to have search engine optimisation (SEO) in place. SEO is quite simply the method used to give your website a prominent ranking on the major search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing.

Internet marketing and SEO is one of the leading forms of advertisement coming second to advertising on television and so having an effective internet marketing campaign and search engine optimisation in place can mean the difference between a successful or unsuccessful website. If you were to think of the search engines as a high street then the website with the high ranking or prominent shop will receive much more business than a website with a low ranking or a shop that is off the high street. Off page SEO is techniques which are put into place beyond your website and which you will not actually see but the search engines will recognise this includes the creation of back links.

When you put SEO into place on your website you need to ensure that you use ethical techniques or white hat SEO, if you use unethical or black hat SEO techniques your website can be penalised by the search engines and you will find a drop in rankings if you are not dropped from the search engines completely. Ethical SEO techniques will follow the guidelines set out by the search engines so that you can be assured your website will not be penalised by putting these techniques into place.

It is important that you place your keywords within the content on your website however depending on the amount of words your content consists of is the amount of times you can use your keywords. If you do not place your keywords in enough times the search engines will only give it a low ranking however if you place your keywords in too many times it could be considered unethical SEO and so you will also receive a low ranking. The content on your website needs to be grammatically correct and not include spelling mistakes, if it is full of grammatical errors and spelling mistakes it will not give visitors to your website a good impression of your business and your service or product.


The design of your website needs to be easy for search engines to read and you also need to avoid it being too complex that your visitors can not navigate it. The creation of back links to your website in business directories allows the search engine to read that your website is recognised as being relevant to the search terms used to find your website and it also allows the search engines to give you a higher ranking.
